“ Keep the dream alive, ” Kate said with a roll of her golden eyes.
Katrina (referred to as "Kate" in Breaking Dawn) is one of the many vampires from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga. She, in addition to her vampire-like capabilities, has an extra ability (she can generate an electric-like current over her skin). Like the Cullens, and unlike most vampires, she and her sisters (Irina and Tanya) reside in Denali, Alaska. Their peaceful lifestyle attracted Eleazar and Carmen, who eventually found and join the sisters in Denali. They are very closely bonded with the Cullens, and are considered the Cullens' extended family.
Kate, Tanya, and Irina are said to have been left with unhealing hearts after their "mother" (the vampire who created them) was destroyed by the Volturi. Their mother (whose name is unknown to the Cullens) created an immortal child, a danger to vampire obscurity, though the sisters did not know. When the Volturi, as royalty in the vampire world and enforcers of their rules, punished the mother, the sisters were only saved by their ignorance of the immortal child. Tanya, Kate, and Irina do not speak or think of their mother often, and have a great respect for the law because of their history.
The sisters found their own path to "vegetarianism," drinking only animal blood. They had a fondness for physical relationships with human men, and the men became their victims. (They are said to have originated the Succubus myth.) The guilt of what they had done led the sisters to abstain from human blood altogether, and their human lovers lived.
Kate is described, like most vampires, as being beautiful with pale skin. Her eyes are gold, indicating her animal blood diet. Like her sisters, she is blonde. Though, different from Tanya's strawberry-tinted curls, Kate has long, straight, pale blond hair.
"The Cullens are all evened up in numbers now. Perhaps it will be our turn next, eh, Kate?" She grinned at the blonde.
"Keep the dream alive," Kate said with a roll of her golden eyes.
Kate makes her first official appearance in the series when she, Tanya, Carmen and Eleazar attend Edward and Bella's wedding. Tanya jokes that now all the Cullens are paired, it may be the sisters' turn next (to which Kate replies with a roll of her eyes and sarcasm). Irina, still upset over the loss of Laurent, did not attend.
Kate snorted. "Do you really doubt me so much, sister?"
Tanya smiled widely at her. "It is a suicide mission, after all."
Kate flashed a grin back and shrugged nonchalantly. "I'm in."
The Denali clan (again, without Irina) return to Forks when the Cullens are in need of help. Still feeling guilty that they did not help fight Victoria's newborn army (in Eclipse) when they felt they should have, the Denali insist on making it up to the Cullens. When the Volturi find out about Edward and Bella's daughter Renesmee (thinking that she is an immortal child like those they destroyed before), they plan to go to Forks to punish the Cullens. The Cullens call for help from the Denali, not to fight, but to bear witness that Renesmee is, in fact, half-human, and not an immortal child. Kate's initial reaction to Renesmee is one of fear and shock, as she is appalled at the idea that they would create an immortal child. However, when she sees what Renesmee really is, she agrees to fight with the Cullens (as do Tanya, Carmen, and Eleazar). She is also shocked at Irina for going to the Volturi and putting the Cullens in danger, though her reaction to Renesmee was not unlike Irina's.
"I'm not sadistic about it," she assured me. "It's just something that comes in handy during a fight."
While preparing for the Volturi to come, Eleazar discovers that Bella has the ability to shield herself from certain vampires' abilities. Kate asks Bella if she can project her power, though she's only ever been able to run a current over her own skin. Bella insists that Kate must help her learn how to project, which Kate agrees to do. Their practice involved Kate continually shocking Edward to see if Bella could shield him, which led Bella to think Kate was lying about not being sadistic about her power. Believing she needed better motivation, Kate made Bella think that she would try to shock Renesmee (the real plan was to make Bella angry enough to shield Nessie, to see if Edward would hear his daughter's thoughts).
Bella's practice sessions with Kate particularly attracted attention from Garrett, one of the nomads staying to help the Cullens with the Volturi conflict. Curious about her power, he approaches her. She acts unsure of her ability to take Garrett down with her power, though Bella believes she's just hustling him. The two share small interactions and flirtations, including Garrett taking an interest in her vegetarian lifestyle.
"Jane's mine," Kate hissed. "She needs a taste of her own medicine."
When the Volturi arrive in Forks, they find that Renesmee is, in fact, Edward and Bella's biological daughter and not an immortal child. However, it seems that they were looking for a fight because of their hunger for power. Trying to provoke the Cullens, they destroy Irina to punish her for her false accusation. Tanya and Kate furiously try to avenge their sister, but Carlisle stops Tanya before she can attack. Rosalie and Emmett unsuccessfully try to stop Kate. Garrett finally tackles her to the ground, even while she tries to shock him off of her. The sisters calm down, but plan to get their revenge if the Volturi decide to fight. Garrett tells Kate that he would follow her anywhere if they survive the battle. However, the Volturi back down when they realize that they are at a disadvantage. The Cullens and friends celebrate, however the Denali (and Garrett) leave quickly as they still mourn the loss of their sister.
